After over a decade of toiling in the merciless
Hollywood trenches, journeyman actor Jeffrey Dean
Morgan finally received his first taste of true
fame in 2005-06 with memorable roles on three hit
shows on three different networks – most notably,
as intern Izzie Stevens' (Katherine Heigl) heart
patient and love interest on “Grey’s Anatomy”.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan was born on April 22,1966
to father Richard Dean Morgan and mother Sandy Thomas.
He grew up in the suburbs of Seattle where he attended
Ben Franklin Elementary School, Rose Hill Junior High,
and then Lake
Washington High School, graduating in 1984. Originally he had aspirations of playing basketball, until an injury in college ended those hopes. In the early 1990's, he decided to help a friend move to LA, and never left. Once ensconced in L.A., he landed cameo spots in various TV shows and independent films, such as “Dillinger and Capone” (1995) and “Undercover” (1995).
Morgan’s star began to rise in 1996 when he landed
the recurring role of Dr. Edward Marcase on UPN’s
“The Burning Zone (1996-97), which led to guest
spots on CBS’s “JAG”, “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”,
“Monk”, and the acclaimed, but quickly canceled
series “The Handler” (2003-04) and “Tru Calling”
(Fox, 2003-05). Morgan continued to work on TV, as
casting directors thought he had reached a certain
maturity as an actor.
And then came 2005, the year it all broke wide
open for the Morgan. His first break-out was guest
starring on the Showtime Original Series “Weeds”
as Judah Botwin, the dead husband (appearing via
old camcorder footage and fantasies) of the show's
protagonist, Nancy Botwin (Mary Louise-Parker).
The part
that catapulted Morgan to the next level arrived
in 2006 in the unexpected form of Denny Duquette,
a heart patient desperately in need of a new
transplant, who still manages to coax a smile out
of intern Isobel “Izzie” Stevens (Katherine Heigl)
on the popular medical drama, “Grey’s Anatomy.”
Although just a bit part, his on-screen chemistry
with Heigl not only elevated his profile with viewers
who wondered who this hunky sick guy was, it also
provided the actress with her first meaty storyline
that really resonated with viewers. In fact, Heigl
began eclipsing her more famous co-stars, Ellen
Pompeo (Grey of “Grey’s Anatomy”) and Sandra Oh, in
the eyes of television critics who, perhaps, initially
regarded her as just a pretty face. Sadly for fans
of the onscreen coupling, Duquette died in the 2006
season finale, bringing viewers to devastated tears.
The heartfelt reaction was a credit to Morgan's
talent and onscreen presence.
To complete the hat-trick, Morgan played the
often-MIA, demon-hunting dad John Winchester,
father of brothers Sam and Dean Winchester (Jensen
Ackles and Jared Padalecki) on The WB’s “Supernatural”.
Between stints in the “Anatomy” ER, Morgan landed
roles in the independent feature "Jam", "Kabluey"
and “The Adventures of Beatle Boyin.” Jeffrey
recently completed shooting the upcoming film
"P.S. I Love You" (based on the novel by Cecelia Ahern),
starring Hillary Swank and
Lisa Kudrow. He is currently working on "The Accidental Husband"
as Uma Thurman's love interest.
Jeffrey is currently working on the film adaptation of "Watchmen", where he will be portraying The Comedian aka Edward Blake. The film is shooting in Vancouver, Canada and is slated to be released in March 2009. In addition, he just finished shooting the movie "Days of Wrath" with Laurence Fishburne.
Jeffrey is currently dating his "Weeds" co-star Mary Louise Parker. He currently resides in Los Angeles with his
9-year-old
rottweiler mix, Bisou. In the little
spare time he has, he enjoys painting and cooking. |
